St. Moses the Black lived during the 4th century A.D. He was a Desert Father and an ascetic.
He was an Ethiopian who once belonged to a band of thieves in Egypt. He was also enslaved to a high government official in Egypt.
St. Moses ran away to the Scete Desert because he feared death at the hands of his enslaver. There he met a group of hermits in the desert and eventually converted to Christianity. Shortly afterwards, he retreated further into the desert in order to overcome his vices. He later was chosen for priesthood.
St Moses died at the age of 75 when he was killed during a raid by Mazics on the monastery. His feast day is August 28th.
