Here’s a summary of the short story
Analyn Richards likes life the way she likes her wedding planning business—orderly and predictable. All doubts aside, getting engaged to the successful man she’s been dating is the natural next step, right?
But on her wedding day uncertainty makes an unscheduled appearance. She finds herself deciding whether to go along with her wedding as planned or whether to make another choice.
Will this perfectionist find the courage to take a chance on the unpredictable?
The Inspiration Behind Touched by Fate
When I wrote this story, I wanted to focus in on a Type-A wedding planner whose life is upended on her wedding day. I also wanted to set this story in the Lowcountry, one of my favorite places to be.
Whenever I read inspirational stories set in the Lowcountry, most of them had one thing in common – they rarely featured people of color in South Carolina. This was peculiar to me because about 30% of the population in South Carolina is of African descent. The Lowcountry holds a rich Black history around the Gullah Geechee community as well. This history reaches back to the arrival of the first Africans at Gadsden’s Wharf in Charleston.
I lived in South Carolina for many years, and I know and appreciate the people and the Black history of the Lowcountry. I want to tell stories about the people and their rich history.
The Heroine
Analyn Richards is a Black and Filipino, Type-A wedding planner whose life is upended on her wedding day, and so she’s forced to make a tough choice.
Analyn is a common name in the Philippines, and it means favor or grace. As you’ll see when you read the story, Analyn’s quirky grandmothers try to help her out in humorous ways.
Brides of the Lowcountry
This is the first of a series of longer stories in the Brides of the Lowcountry series. I would categorize Touched by Fate as a women’s fiction, rather than a romance, but my future stories in the series are romances.
