I’m excited about today’s interview with novelist K. Dawn Byrd. K. Dawn’s latest book, Killing Time, releases this month.
**Welcome to The Literary Mama, K. Dawn. Tell us about your journey to publication.
I’ve always been an avid reader and decided it might be fun to try my hand at writing. I studied every book I could find on the craft and had been writing a little over a year when my first book was published by Desert Breeze Publishing, an ebook publisher. They’ve been so wonderful to work with that I’ve written four for them so far and will soon sign a contract for three more, a young adult mystery series.
**What is Killing Time about?
Here’s the cover blurb:
Mindy McLaurin, thinks it’s the end of the world when she’s incarcerated on trumped-up embezzlement charges. While in jail, she investigates the death of an inmate who allegedly died of an overdose. Mindy suspects foul play when her cellmate dies and she learns that both women had ingested the same drug. Mindy trusts no one, including Drew Stone, the handsome counselor she can’t stop thinking about. She faces many challenges, including constant interrogation by the Major and emotional abuse from the other inmates. Upon release, someone is stalking her and framing her for the murder. Can she prove to Counselor Stone that she’s innocent of all charges before she loses him forever?
**Who are your favorite characters in Killing Time and why?
My favorite character is Mindy because she’s such a strong Christian woman, but not perfect. She was raised by her grandparents and her grandfather was a preacher. Even though she’s a Christian, she falls at times just like all of us. Her character is severely tested while she’s incarcerated and she doesn’t always make the right decisions, but she loves the Lord.
**What do you hope readers walk away with knowing from Killing Time?
That God is with us no matter what. Being incarcerated and then stalked upon release was hard for Mindy, but God was there in the midst of it all. Sometimes, God allows us to go through the “storms” of life, but He’s there walking through them with us.
**What other new projects do you have in the future?*
This year, I’ll have two inspirational releases from Desert Breeze Publishing, a young adult romance in June, and an adult romance in October. For 2012, a series of young adult mysteries will release in January, June, and December.
**What is one thing people may be surprised to know about you?
I used to ride a Harley Davidson, but gave it up to have more time for writing. My husband still has his, but I don’t ride on the back.
